Founder

My journey to founding Heartland Academy began through my work in special education, where I discovered a deep passion for supporting individuals with autism and special needs. What started as a career quickly became my life's purpose—to create a place where young adults can continue learning, growing, and finding their place in the community beyond high school. I believe every individual deserves the opportunity to live with purpose, confidence, and connection. With more than 20 years of experience working in the field of education and applied behavior analysis, I've had the privilege of working with individuals and families across multiple states. My work has always centered on collaboration—partnering with parents, educators, and dedicated teams to create meaningful, individualized support for those I serve.

Through Heartland Academy, my goal is to build not just a learning environment, but a community where every person feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential

Founder

Heartland Academy was inspired by a personal journey of love, advocacy, and determination. After my son Ahmed was diagnosed with Autism at age 3, I shifted my career from law to special education to better understand and support his needs. Over the years, I transitioned to business program management, but when exploring post-high school options for Ahmed, I discovered a critical gap: programs that combined functional academics with vocational training for young adults with special needs were limited. This realization sparked the creation of Heartland Academy — a place where young adults can continue learning, develop practical skills, and grow into confident, independent members of society.

It is a vision I had for my son- and now, a mission I proudly pursue for our community.

Heartland Academy community celebrating together

Our Mission

Heartland Academy exists to empower young adults with special needs to build meaningful, independent lives through comprehensive transition education. We believe that every individual deserves the opportunity to discover their strengths, develop practical skills, and contribute to their community with confidence and dignity.

Our mission is to bridge the gap between high school and adult life by providing a supportive, structured environment where clients can continue their growth. We focus on functional academics, independent life skills, and social integration—the essential building blocks for employment success and community belonging.

Through individualized instruction, real-world experiences, and strong family partnerships, we help clients transition from dependence to independence, from uncertainty to confidence, and from isolation to meaningful community connection.

Our Vision

We envision a world where young adults with special needs are recognized for their abilities, valued for their contributions, and fully integrated into their communities. A world where disability does not limit potential, and where every individual has access to the education, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

At Heartland Academy, we're working to make this vision a reality—one client at a time. We see our graduates living independently, working in meaningful jobs, building lasting friendships, and actively participating in their communities. We see families empowered with knowledge, resources, and hope for their child's future.

Our vision extends beyond our walls. We aim to be a model for transition education, demonstrating that with the right support, young adults with special needs can achieve remarkable independence and make valuable contributions to society.

Students achieving independence and success

Our Approach

We combine evidence-based practices with genuine care to create a learning environment where every client can succeed.

Individualized Learning

Every client receives a personalized education plan tailored to their unique strengths, needs, and goals. We meet clients where they are and help them progress at their own pace.

Hands-On Experience

Learning happens through doing. Clients practice skills in real-world settings, from our training kitchen to community job sites, building confidence through authentic experiences.

Community Integration

We believe in learning within the community, not apart from it. Regular outings, volunteer work, and partnerships with local businesses provide authentic social and vocational experiences.

Family Partnership

Families are essential partners in their child's success. We maintain open communication, provide regular updates, and work collaboratively to support each client's growth.

Strength-Based Focus

We focus on what clients can do, not what they can't. By building on individual strengths and interests, we help clients develop confidence and discover their potential.

Goal-Oriented Progress

Clear, measurable goals guide our instruction. We celebrate progress, track growth, and continuously adjust our approach to ensure each client is moving toward independence.
